Sonakshi Sinha
I always wanted to do a comedy and a space-related movie
Bolly.id - Sonakshi Sinha, who started opposite Salman Khan in Dabangg, has clearly had a big start. But the lovely Sonakshi now is on a mission to complete a glorious journey, where she has been experimenting with several genres of movies. She tried a retro look of a sad love-lorn girl in Lootera, to a naughty doctor in the recently released Khandaani Shafakhana, and a headstrong scientist in Mission Mangal. In between, she appeared in a small princely role in Kalannk, which did not make a mark at the box office.
In a very short time, Sonakshi has covered a long journey. Her choice of movies has been interesting and she has won a loyal bunch of fans. The actress has never been in the news, for wrong reasons, she is perhaps the only actress who has never been linked with any hero in the industry.
Sonakshi has been having a strong run with her movies releasing back to back, after a brief spell of staying away from the screen in search of an interesting script and working with acclaimed directors. Sonakshi appeared in an interesting comedy movie titled Khandaani Shafakhana, which was appreciated for its unique subject. It presented the problem of sexual problems that continues to be a taboo subject in the small town of India.
Sonakshi is clearly the only actress who has been working on her own terms. She has been constantly working on her career graph, where she is picking the movies that make sense and entertain the audience.
The reason that most of Sonakshi films are different from each other. Here are the excerpts from the interview, where Sonakshi talks about her films, life and politics of Bollywood:
Congratulations, Sonakshi, it is so good to see you in so many different avatars in a very short time?
Thanks, I always wanted to work in various genres of movies and play different characters. We have been working hard to a different cinema and also some innovative content. There were times when you want to do something interesting and work only to enhance your ability and test your talent. All this motivated me to write and work hard.
Everyone had a lot of hopes from Kalank. How was it to deal with the failure of this mega-blockbuster?
People had such high expectations from Kalank, but its box-office result was a disaster. But, that is something that we should all learn from. I just believe in doing my best because the rest is not in my control. The success is based on several reasons that make a movie appealing to all.
Your film Khandaani Shafakhana is about sex problems and diseases. However, this is a topic that most families avoid?
This is definitely a taboo topic and we all simply avoid talking about it. This is what the movie is all about. I enjoyed working here. But, I am a traditional person just like how entire India is. Trust me, I’m not the only one. There’s a large population of this country that has not spoken to their parents openly about sex because the subject has a strange awkwardness attached to it. That’s why people seek information outside when it should be given to them at home. I hope when my parents see this film, they can have that chat with me and then, we will break that wall.
Now with this movie, do you support discussion around sex?
Sex education should be a must in schools; only then can we make everything else around it seem normal. Why leave it to self-discovery, which sometimes can make kids go astray? If we educate youngsters about sex at the right time, they can make more informed choices, they can be clearer about their sexual orientation, be sensitive towards other people’s sexual preferences and most importantly, practise safe sex.
Tell us about Mission Mangal, which has emerged as one of the best movies on women empowerment?
This is definitely about strong talented and educated women. To all of us, it was teamwork. Even while we were shooting, nobody was made to feel smaller than the other person, despite there being so many people. And the fact of the matter is that Akshay Kumar is the biggest star in the film. Someone had told me very long back that despite being a movie on strong women, the saleability of a movie depends on a big star. Akshay is prominently shown in the poster. The reason is - he is the most saleable actor, and so he is prominently placed on the screen. He’s the highest-selling star in the entire film, that is why his face is bigger on the poster.
Please tell us about your role in the movie?
I play a propulsion expert, and this is the strongest role I have done so far. When I was told about the role, I was delighted and at the same time very proud to have a role like that. This movie is historical as it speaks of the back story of each character. The characters make the movie and have an interesting background. The narrative of the movie makes the audience as well as the actor extremely proud of the fact that some simple and talented women made an impossible possible.
However, you have been shown as someone who wants to go to the USA?
The character is of a brash person, who aspire to go to NASA. I enjoyed playing brat of a girl who wants to go to America. I am a forward-thinking person, who is totally detached towards the country and the mission, but towards the end gets the right emotions for India. That’s what makes the character special.
One always get to hear about catfight between actresses. How was the experience to work with so many actresses, including the very accomplished Vidya Balan?
Actresses never get along is a myth. This is a wonderful experience to work with so many actors. Rest all that is published is simply gossip.
How real is the movie, considering all of saw the pictures of simple saree-clad women who played a crucial role in the Mass Orbiter Mission.
This is a factual movie, which is not a documentary. There is a story which is well narrated and everyone enjoys playing. It is very important to keep the audience informed.
While growing up did you ever think of being an astronaut yourself?
I wanted to do an astronaut. Was a science student but could not do the math, that is where I could not realise my talent. I would love to do a movie in Space about life on Mars. I would want to do an action between humans and Marsian. A bit of comedy would make it wonderful.
Tell us about your experience being Baby Bedi. Do you relate to the character and do your parents treat you as a baby in the house?
Yes, I am still a baby in the house. My parents treat me as a child and will continue to do so.
When you started out people had a lot to speak about you?
Yes, I love bein/g an Imperfectionist. I don't believe those things that are mentioned about me. I have a little mark on my face which I am very fond of. I have never tried to change it. I look at it as a birthmark.
Do you think that you have achieved as an actress?
I wanted to be that type of heroine who wants to do everything. Be it a Dabangg, to Lootera. I enjoyed Masala film because one needs a lot of larger than life person. What more do I need when I have one of the top dialogues such as Thappar se dar nahi lagta.
What do you do when you want to relax?
I do nothing. I just relax without any plan. I stay back at home in pyjamas only to keep my mind away from anything. That, for me, is the best form of relaxation.
Since you speak very little about your personal life and relationship. Who comes in your best friend category Best friend category?
I am in general very happy with the people around me. I do not have many best friends, but most of the actors I have worked with Prabhu Deva, Salman Khan are very close to me
What did you learn from your co-actors?
I have learnt fitness from Salman and being a health freak from Akshay Kumar. John Abraham, on the other hand, is one of the most disciplined actors we have.
Is it true that boys never approach you?
Yes (laughs). They are nowhere close to approaching me. However, right now I am very busy with my work. I have no time for myself and I enjoy my space. So those who want to approach should wait till I am really interested in it.
Do you get offended by what appears in social media?
Earlier I used to be really offended. I have started feeling really sorry for them. I realised that they are useless and I love to ignore them.
What do you have to say about the new trend of airport look?
I hate this trend. I know celebrities have to be people’s person, but, because you don’t want to be clicked all the time. I just do not want people to take my pictures even when I am not prepared for it.
